The “Beaches Case” brought against a number of United Progressive Party (UPP) officers and supporters in 2025 has concluded.
The matter, which had dragged on for months, ended in the Magistrates Court this morning, April 9, to the relief of those accused.
“They called three witnesses – all no-shows,” reports one officer. “Then the magistrate [who appeared annoyed] said, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, I find you not guilty. You are free to go. Have a good day.’”
The case, known to have been instigated by the Gaston Browne Cabinet, was brought by a property owner in St. Phillip’s North, whose land was crossed by a group of Party people wishing to visit Laurys Bay last June, on the Whit Monday holiday.
In Antigua and Barbuda, the public’s access to the beaches cannot be denied. Private property owners are required to provide a route by which the people can reach the seashore.
