Chargers Volleyball Club Seeks Divine Covering at Inspiring Season-Opening Church Service in Swetes

On a bright Sunday morning in Swetes Village, the Chargers Volleyball Club gathered in quiet anticipation at Swetes Wesleyan Holiness Church for what has now become a cherished tradition — the season-opening church service marking the official start of another competitive year.

From early in the morning, the church grounds reflected a sense of purpose and unity. Athletes dressed in Chargers colors stood alongside parents, coaches, administrators, and supporters — a representative cross-section of the Chargers family. Some were seasoned competitors preparing for another demanding season, while others were young newcomers experiencing their first moment of belonging to something larger than themselves.

Inside the sanctuary, a spirit of gratitude and expectation filled the air as Pastor Olson Daniel welcomed the club with warmth and affirmation. His message spoke directly to the journey of young athletes — reminding them that discipline, humility, teamwork, and perseverance are not only sporting virtues but spiritual ones as well.

The service became a powerful moment of reflection on the club’s mission since its founding in 2022 — to provide safe spaces, mentorship, and opportunity for young people across Antigua and Barbuda. What began as a response to a need for structured youth engagement has evolved into a thriving movement shaping athletes and leaders between the ages of 9 and 21.

Pastor Daniel’s prayer over the club was especially moving. With players, coaches, and parents bowing their heads, he asked for divine covering over every training session, every match, every journey, and every aspiration.

He prayed for:
• Protection from injury as athletes push their physical limits
• Mental strength and emotional resilience during the highs and lows of competition
• Unity and sportsmanship among teammates and opponents alike
• Wisdom for coaches and administrators guiding young lives beyond the court
• Opportunities and open doors for scholarships, national representation, and personal growth

For Chargers, this moment carried profound meaning. The club’s leadership has always emphasized that success is measured not only in trophies but in character formation, academic progress, and the development of responsible citizens. Seeking God’s blessing at the outset of the season symbolized a recognition that preparation is both physical and spiritual.

The presence of the club’s leadership team — including founder Franz deFreitas and Head Coach Rosemarie Simon overseeing female program development reinforced the collective commitment to holistic youth development. Their shared vision continues to drive programs ranging from developmental training and competitive league participation to beach volleyball, mentorship sessions, and summer engagement initiatives.

As the congregation joined in song and prayer, the atmosphere shifted from ceremony to celebration. Smiles, embraces, and quiet conversations reflected a community bound by shared purpose — parents proud of their children’s growth, coaches encouraged by progress, and players energized by the season ahead.

This year, Chargers prepares to enter five teams into national competition — Velocity and Eagles in the first division, alongside Momentum, Falcons, and Eagles 2 in the second division. The road ahead promises challenge, growth, and opportunity. Yet, before the first whistle blows, the club paused to anchor itself in faith.

When the service concluded, the Chargers family stepped out into the Swetes morning with renewed confidence. The court would soon call for speed, strength, and strategy but the day’s gathering served as a reminder that behind every serve and spike lies a deeper foundation of guidance, protection, and purpose.

The season has begun, not merely with training schedules and match fixtures, but with prayer, unity, and gratitude.

And as Chargers Volleyball Club moves forward, it does so under a shared belief — that when preparation meets purpose, and effort is paired with faith, young people are empowered not only to compete, but to thrive.
