Residents of an All Saints West community are reporting an upsurge in crime – specifically, burglaries in the areas of St Clair Heights and Buckleys Line – and are asking why MP Anthony Smith, Jr. is not addressing it.
A homeowner tells REAL News that the spate of crime has been discussed in a neighbourhood WhatsApp chat that reportedly includes Smith, who allegedly has failed to even acknowledge the situation.
The longtime resident notes that Smith is promoting a town hall meeting in the constituency, with several colleague ministers of government set to speak. However, the minister responsible for Public Safety, Sir Steadroy Benjamin, is not on the cards.
The man, who is self-employed, says he, himself, has fallen victim to thieves; but he is so demoralized about the situation nationally that he has not even bothered to report this crime.
“If the Police not looking for people, I can’t imagine they’ll be looking for tools,” he says to explain the decision not to report.
Meanwhile, hold-ups and robberies are continuing across the society, with two primary schools reportedly being broken into last weekend.
The situation – plus the lack of arrests – in too
many cases has led residents to conclude that the Browne Administration’s claim of 150 surveillance cameras being in operation is nothing but a lie.
To date, no one can recall a single crime in the last decade being solved – or investigation being assisted – by these supposedly existing cameras.
In fact, a policeman – during Monday’s Eye on the Issues programme – confirmed that officers are unaware of the locations of these 150 devices and asked from what location they are being monitored.
The promise of the installation of these crime-solving devices dates back several years, as tracked through successive Budget Speeches put out by the Browne Administration.
